Welcome to Cogworks Cogworks specialty is the design and manufacture of quality museum exhibits and extraordinary wall sculptures. Our precision wooden gears are featured on much of our work. These gears are aesthetic and manipulative; capturing the visual complexity of the machine. Cogworks has been designing mechanisms in wood for over two decades.
Factory of Dreams Wall Sculpture ~ “Factory of Dreams” kinetic energy results from cranking the driving gear handle to set other gears, or cogs, and pulleys in motion. The wall sculpture can hang vertically on the wall via a unique and interesting magnetic system. This system allows the sculpture to be removed instantly, therefore allowing it to be observed on a horizontal plane. Uniquely, this sculptural piece can be altered if desired: using tools supplied, one can change the configuration of the piece to make a design of ones own, just like Hornby’s “Meccano”. The “Factory of Dreams” is made from the finest woods and metals available. The woods include; Walnut, Cherry, Bloodwood, Mahogony, Lacewood, Tiger Maple, Birdseye Maple, Redwood Burl, and Tiger Ash. Cartridge brass, and stainless steel are the metals used. All the metal and wood components are machined in Ian’s “Cogworks” workshop in Antrim, New Hampshire. The circumference of the sculptures matrix base is framed by Walnut with Bloodwood inlays.

Education Cherry Cogbox (Set1c) ~We have made our Set 1 educational cogbox since 1989. Set 1 is ideal for introducing a number of important principles relative to simple machines and gears. This educational tool is intended for 1st through 4th grade students. The primary goal of Set 1 is to give the student an appreciation of gears through play. The gears may be moved around on a triangular matrix board, 1000's of combinations being possible. As the student manipulates the gears a basic understanding of gears follows. Comes boxed in green and gold with instruction sheet.

Cogworks Specialty Gears & Parts Cogworks Solid Cherry Module 3 Gears
Cogworks specialty gears and precision wooden parts are used in many mechanical artistic creations around the globe. Gears can be made to customer specifications in hardwood or ply. In hardwood, Sugar Maple (Rock Maple) and Cherry are the most popular. Gears can be bushed with brass to enable fastening easily to a shaft. These standard cherry involute gears shown have a module=3. The module of a gear is the pitch diameter in mm divided by the number of teeth. The gears have a standard center hole of 6mm or optionally 0.250". Gears can be made from plain sawn lumber or quarter sawn lumber. Standard hardwood gears from 8 teeth thru 32 teeth can easily be meshed without much concern for humidity. Module 4 and 5 gears are also readily available.
Cogworks " Harrison" Module 5 Gears - Extremely Stable This range of Module 5 gears features a solid birch laminated core with solid hardwood tooth segments. The tooth segments run along the grain so are extremely stable. The solid wood teeth look fantastic and are extremely strong. Gears with teeth 12 and below feature a laminated sandwich of birch ply and cherry. Tooth segments can be made from many different woods and even mixed. We use some gears with alternating walnut and hard maple tooth segments in some of our science tools.
We have made this gear style for use in high end displays and are amazed by their strength and beauty. High end veneers and laminates can be applied to the center of the gear. Gears can be bushed in brass if need to be fastened to a shaft, or if needed to spin on a shaft bushed in black Delrin. Sizes available approx 2" up thru 48".
