Set 4 - Gears & Pulleys Price: $495.00
Shown: Cogworks Set4- Standard Cogworks Set4 provides the necessary spark to get middle and high school students enthused about simple and complex machines. Set 4's unique design features include a 20" by 20" rectangular matrix board with a plethora of tapped insert holes. Set 4 includes all the parts listed in the Set4 kit list tabulated in the left green window Please see the Set10 description for a full explanation of the Cogworks stacked pulley/gear drive system.
Set 4 has a great sampling of pulleys,
gears and hardware, it comes packaged with the mechanical arrangement shown left. The arrangement
features an interesting design featuring two sub gearboxes, idler pulleys and
belt systems. We call this as delivered machine "Discovery".
Mounting Holes Note: The Set4/Set5 matrix board shown above has a solid brass bonded thru bushing in each corner, 1/4" internal diameter. The base is a solid 1" thick with internal steel tapped inserts. The thru bushing can be used to solidly mount the base to a wall or exhibit. A series of set4 bases can easily form a larger exhibit with a different mechanical arrangement on each base. The corner holes can also be used to mount posts to mount a polycarbonate display dust cover.Set 4 - Packaging
Set 4 - Tutorial building the machine " Discovery" The best way to learn is to do. Below are the step by step instructions to make a creation with Set4. We have many standardtutorials that can deeply explore mechanical motion & machines. We have found that if students go through the step by step construction process it has a profound effect on creating interest and actions to learn.
Step 1- Screw in the Posts. The post position is identified by column, alphabetically from left to right. The student finds the column and then counts down the required number of holes to identify the correct post hole. The correct "Unit" length post ( 1U, 2U, 3U, 4U, 5U or 6U) is then inserted. "Discovery" required 11 posts in total. Post positions and unit length are given below. A8-2U, C13-3U, D5-3U, F8-1U, G3-3U, K5-1U, K10-5U, N4-4U, O12-3U, Q5-4U and Q9-4U. After completion the board should look like the picture. Note: Posts should be tightened in place by the cogworks wrench.
Step 2- First Layer of Pulleys & Gears Install the Qty 3 6cm pulleys, Qty3 12cm-24 tooth gears, Qty 2 6cm-12 tooth gears. Install brass "1U" spacers on any post without a gear or pulley. Inserts brass close coupled drive pins on the gears and pulleys as shown. Attach Belt17 ( "17" is length in cm), coded green. Install stainless steel shaft collar on any fully populated post.
Install the gears, pulleys and spacers as shown. Attach Belt14 ( "14" is length in cm), coded red. Install stainless steel shaft collar on any fully populated post.
Step 4- Third Layer of Pulleys & Gears Install the gears, pulleys and spacers as shown. Attach additional Belt14 coded red and Belt17 coded green. Install stainless steel shaft collar on any fully populated post.
Step 5- Fourth Layer of Pulleys & Gears Install the gears, pulleys and spacers as shown. Attach Belt16 color coded orange. Install stainless steel shaft collar on any fully populated post.
Step 6- Add the crank !!
Step 7- Add reference markers via brass knurled screws, crank and study the motion !! Please click on picture to see in motion.
